This is the Blacklock line, not the classic Lodge blank. Same iron, less weight in the hand, a smoother cast finish that releases a scallop or a chop without babying it. The ridges do real work: they hold the pan off the fat so a strip steak sears instead of stewing, and they leave marks you’d otherwise need a grill outside for. Twelve inches covers two proteins at once without crowding. It goes from stovetop to a 500-degree oven to the broiler without a second thought, and it takes an aggressive scrub without complaint. Preheat it properly and it holds heat through a cold cut of meat hitting the surface, which is the whole point of cast iron in the first place.
A grill pan earns its shelf space by doing one job the flat pans can't: marking and searing at the same time, on a stovetop, on a day when the outdoor grill isn't an option. This one is light enough that a cook actually reaches for it on a busy pass instead of leaving it in the cupboard because the classic Lodge is heavy enough to strain a wrist over a full shift. It holds heat like cast iron should, handles a broiler finish, and takes the abuse of a working kitchen without flaking or warping.
