Doris Placemat Almond
A woven mat that lies flat and stays put
We earn nothing on this one. It’s here because it’s good, and the link goes to Heath Ceramics.
Heath makes this in Sausalito on the same looms they use for their runners, and it shows in how the weave holds its shape wash after wash. The almond color hides crumbs and coffee rings better than white ever will, which matters if you’re the one doing dishes after dinner. It sits under a plate without sliding around, gives the table a little texture and warmth, and wipes clean with a damp cloth. No stiff coating that cracks, no edges that lift off the table. Set four of these under stoneware and the table looks considered without anyone having tried very hard. Good for a weeknight bowl of pasta or a table set for people you’re trying to impress.
I set my own table with these because they do the one thing a placemat has to do: stay flat and stay clean without babysitting. The weave is tight enough that it doesn't fray at the edges after a season of use, and the almond tone is forgiving with wine and oil in a way white linen isn't. It's a small object, but it's the kind of small object that tells you someone who buys tableware for a living picked it.
